១.ព្យញ្ជនៈ និង ស្រៈConsonants & vowels
Modern Khmer uses a wrting system consisting of 44 independent consonant symbols (33 regular symbols and 11 others modified by the diacritics (៉) and ( ៊ ) ). The principle of the writing system is that each independent symbol represents, not an isolated consonant or vowel (as in a strictly alphabetic system), but a syllable. Thuseach consonant symbol represents a spoken consonant © followed by a spoken vowel (V). There are 12 independent vowel symbols and 16 conjunct (or dependent) vowel symbols which serve in various combinations with the consonant symbols. The vowel symbols are pronounced in two different ways, according to the set to which they belong. (Ref: Communicating in Khmer Software, by Chhany Sak Humphry)
